City Style and Living - Spring 2008 - (Page 45) UPCOUNTRY MAU One rainy day, we took the drive up to Makawao, passing the Holy Rosary church on our way. In a beautiful, quaint town, resembling that of an Old Hollywood western, we stopped at Komoda's Bakery. The brown façade of the general store, though not the site of the original 1916 structure, looked unprepossessing. We had heard that you must arrive early; even at eight o'clock in the morning, the place had a steady stream of eager customers. A lady next to us in line had driven all the way from Hana to buy boxes of 'donoughts on a stick' for herself and her neighbours. We asked her what we should try and she began pointing at one thing and then another in the glass case in front of the counter until she finally said "everything, everything is good here". So, of course, we tried everything - glorious cream puffs, and cocoa puffs, donoughts ostentatiously strewn with ground macadamia nuts, a crisp apple turnover, a sweet coconut turnover, and the local malasada, a Portuguese style donought. We took our large box back with us, thinking it would last us for several days. The pastries and baked goods were so delicious, however, that we finished the box within a day, and made another trip to Komoda's, as a farewell to the island. Location: Komoda Bakery, 3674 Baldwin Ave., Makawao Open: Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Telephone: (808) 572-7261 Price: Under $5.00 for most baked treats (all prices are in US dollars) Komoda Bakery When we asked a surfer for directions to the Paia Fish Market, he was envious, "oh, that'll be the best lunch you'll have". The Paia Fish Market conjures images of vendors selling various fish for cooking. Instead, it is a small intimate restaurant on a street corner in the town of Paia. Long communal tables, and a large rustic chalkboard, which advertise the menu, are part of the restaurant's charm. If you are coming to enjoy lunch, be prepared to wait in line, as the Paia Fish Market is one of the most popular spots in the area. We had an opah (moonfish) seafood salad. The thick steak of meaty sweet fish paired with a rich tarter sauce over a lovely bunch of fresh micro greens was 'ono (delicious) and definitely worth the drive. This rich fish, was historically considered good luck by fishermen, who would give them away for free. We also had blackened mahi, which was served on a bed of rice, piping hot, with home fries. The portion of fish in both dishes was large, and this lunch combination certainly filled our appetites.
