City Style and Living - Spring 2008 - (Page 46) e wharf in Lahaina invites mid-a ernoon strollers. Sometimes on vacation, familiar tastes are a welcomed treat. With two locations, Pizza Paradiso, is part of a successful restaurant chain (sister restaurant is Cilantro Fresh Mexican Grill). It has won numerous awards, including being voted best pizza on the island by Frommer's, and winning the taste of Lahaina prize in 2000. These awards are proudly displayed throughout the comfortable family friendly space. The pizzeria’s location in Honowokai marketplace makes a convenient stop after snorkeling in nearby Kaanapali Beach, or Napili Bay. On our visit, we were served personally by the friendly manager, who was beaming to take our order. Have a vegetarian in tow? Paradiso’s veggie sandwich is a tantalizing mix of grilled eggplant, vegetables and feta. The restaurant's seven varieties of thin crust pizzas rival those found on the mainland, and we couldn't resist trying a slice. The assortment of salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes are equally satisfying. We were pleased with the rotini pasta salad, which was tossed in a classic tangy marinara sauce. If you have a sweet tooth, the menu has a selection of sweet dishes all under for $6.00. Location: 3350 Honoapiilani Rd. (Honowakai Marketplace); and 2435 Kaanapali Parkway (Whaler's Village) Telephone: (808) 667-2929, and (808) 667-0333 Open: 11a.m to10p.m. Price: $13.00 -$27.00 Pizza Paradiso WEST MAUI Renowned for offering large portions of cosmopolitan Hawaiian fare, at affordable prices, Aloha Mixed Plate in the harbor area of Lahaina is a hugely popular hangout for locals and visitors alike. Part of the draw is the ocean view, as well as the items from the pupu (appetizer) platter (say that three times fast). During our visit, the staff was buzzing, taking orders, and seating customers according to their unusual system (you must first write your name on a clipboard and then wait to be called and seated). We tasted the award winning coconut prawns, which were fried and breaded in a crust of desiccated coconut, served with island chutney. Though these were not quite as fresh as we had hoped, they were still tasty. Other appetizers include mainland staples such as Cajun fries, mozzarella sticks, spicy chicken drummets, and calamari rings. The menu also features a variety of stir-fry’s, salads, sandwiches, noodles, burgers and grilled meats. The plate lunches satisfy the largest appetites and are served with rice, and macaroni salad. Best of all, nothing on the menu costs more than $12.95. Location: 1285 Front Street, Lahaina (across the street from Lahaina Cannery Mall) Telephone: (808) 661-3322 Open: daily 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Price: $2.95-$12.95 Aloha Mixed Plate Located near Kaanapali, Soup Nutz and Java Jazz is an eclectic bistro that has plenty of whimsy and atmosphere. The cozy space, friendly staff and casual interior evoke images of a typical Latin café. True to the ‘hang loose’ lifestyle, many of the wraps, salads, and smoothies appeal to the active- health conscious eater; though the combinations of flavours appeal to the taste buds as well. We indulged in a delightful falafel wrap, which was served with hummus in a tomato tortilla. The fresh flavours and large serving was a hearty meal after a morning swim. The restaurant also features breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Evenings are host to live music and a full bar - perfect for a mellow night out. Locals know this establishment as the place for the best coffee on the island, and you may even catch Mr. Azad, the owner, jamming on his guitar any given day of the week.
