WHAT CAN EUNOIA, THE ANCIENT GREEK WORK FOR BEAUTIFUL THINKING, create? Modern artwork, statue-like models, hypnotic music and pleasing food. This was exactly the scene at an event held at the Gerry Thomas art gallery in Calgary benefitting the Calgary women’s emergency shelter. The work of Artists Within Inc. founder Tara Anand, Eunoia celebrated the opening of Artists Within’s modeling agency. The event included an auction with several pieces by local artists, a draw for a stunning diamond necklace from Jewels by Maximes, a fashion show introducing Artists Within models and of course, amuses bouche catered by Tangerine supperclub. Co-executive chefs Kai Salimaki and Jared Alvey coaxed attendees with a well balanced menu of appetizers and dessert - fruity Tuscan Pietra Pinta olive oil, tuna belly, gougères, and madeleines. The supperclub concept, widely popularized in the 1930’s and 40’s in the United States (New York and northern mid-west), is all encompassing. Diners are encouraged to spend an entire night dining, relaxing and enjoying entertainment within the supperclub space. Salimaki has been working in the kitchen since the age of thirteen, starting in Edmonton before working in the kitchens at Catch, Muriettas, and Eight in Calgary. Alvey, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, spent time working with various chefs in New York and Toronto before returning to his hometown and Tangerine. Within minutes of observing the pair, their likeness is apparent. Of working together Salimacki notes, “our styles are so similar. Things could clash if we weren’t so much alike,” to which Alvey quickly chimes in, “it’s great to work together. We practically finish each other’s sentences.” The symbiotic culinary relationship creates a seamless workflow in the kitchen. The successful evening raised significant funds for the shelter, which is indeed a beautiful thing.
