Malta is an archipelago comprised of three islands Malta, Comino and Gozo. It is such a relaxing wonderful place, I would love spending time just wondering and exploring the wonderful streets of Valletta, the main area of Malta. The shopping is very good and the restaurants are clean and offer a great selection. I would follow the custom of the locals who walk every evening along the water, while vegetable and fruit wagons followed along. By day, the vibrant colours of Malta came alive in the painted fishing boats, the wonderful colors of the harbours, and the old buildings. The history of the island is amazing. They have built a wonderful interpretive center for visitors to learn about the history and how Malta came to be the interesting place that it is today. From the Greeks to the Carthaginians to the Arabs, Sicilians and British, the islands have a long history of foreign invasion. The trace of this history is evident today in the silent city called Mdina, the fact that the Photography by BeTo FroTA Maltese speak English with a sprinkling of Arabic words and the architecture. There are Neolithic ruins on the island, works by Caravaggio and forts used by the Knights of St. John. The islands were also pivotal during the Second World War as a base for the Allied forces. The British government awarded the George Cross to the Maltese people. However, it is the people that make Malta such a popular destination for many Europeans. The people are hospitable and the quality of life is high though the real estate prices are also high because many people are moving to this beautiful island to work and retire. There are beaches all over the island and within a short drive I was able to find secluded, sandy, relaxing beaches. The limestone quarries on Malta are a point of interest and because of the geological composition of the islands, there are also beaches of rock. This is making me miss Malta. — Teri Martinson, as told to Kailash Maharaj citystyleandliving.com | SUMMER 2008 | 49 RESTAURANT PHoENIx rESTAUrANT inside the 1930’s decor of the phoenicia hotel, diners can enjoy their meal, prepared by Executive chef victor Borg al fresco, on the restaurants terrace, overlooking the mediterranean. le meridien phoenicia, e mall, Floriana www.phoeniciamalta.com ST.
