City Style and Living - Summer 2008 - (Page 54) » Arrivals/Departures in the air over one of Haiti's nest beaches is beyond compare” “the view while suspended NAME: Natalie Gunther jUST rETUrNEd froM: a Caribbean Cruise (Puerto rico, Tortola, Dominican republic, Haiti) INSPIRATION FOR vISITING: We took this trip last year and decided to make it an annual family outing and it's really warm. MUST SEE: Old San Juan, Puerto Rico is architecturally and culturally beautiful. The sheer amount of color is breathtaking and everywhere you turn you're surrounded by exotic plant-life. We always felt very safe there whether it was in the middle of the day or late at night. The hundreds of little shops and restaurants (most of which have escaped becoming "tourist traps", thankfully) will keep you busy for days on end. The shopping is incredible. NOT WORTH THE HyPE: Charlotte Amelie, St. Thomas was disappointing it has a reputation of having resplendent beaches (which it most certainly does) but has fallen into the "tourist trap" category. Everywhere you look you're surrounded by shops selling cheap souvenirs and pushy salespeople. Culture? There is none anymore, unfortunately. BEST SOUvENIER FROM yOUR TRIP: The thousands pictures we took and the video of us swimming with dolphins in Tortola. WORTH THE SPlURGE: The tickets for the zip-line in Labadee, Haiti were well worth the price. It's the largest zipline over open water and the view while traveling suspended in the air over one of Haiti's finest beaches is beyond compare. The parasailing in St. Thomas was incredible too. There are so many exciting excursions on these cruises. ITEM THAT yOU WISH yOU HAD PACKED: A book telling us how not to pack so much, and more sunscreen. OMBUDSPERSON TROUBLE IN THE SKIES HELP!
