Headlining the two day music festival at Fort Calgary are Stone Temple Pilots and The Tragically Hip. With acts like The Flaming Lips, Matthew Good, City and Colour, and the Constantines also performing, the festival is aimed at all musical tastes. “We’ve got a lineup that’s got all genres covered – we couldn’t come to Calgary without serving up a little country,” says Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin Festivals. The Virgin Festival Calgary is also set to be a carbon neutral event with on-site recycling, biodegradable food and drink containers and green energy sources being used. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Quebec City, the Calgary Stampede will host its sister city on July 11. The event promises to be a memorable stamp on the city, featuring food, entertainment, and even special decor at the park’s gates, creating a virtual Quebec city festival. As an added incentive, the first 40,000 visitors to the park on July 11, wearing the ubiquitous cowboy hat, will receive a souvenir to celebrate the anniversary. In addition, every night during the famous grandstand show, Quebec performers will entertain the crowd. Yahoo! This summer The Tempest is infused with Aboriginal culture and The Merry Wives of Windsor takes on a 1950’s flair. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is also back for noon-hour performances (see website for details). Director Martin Fishman has led the once student-based company to a professional theatre company with a strong focus on mentorship.
