City Style and Living - Winter 2007/2008 - (Page 29) City Stle & Living FASHION PRÊT-À-PORTER Fourty -eight years, countless shows, a Legion d’Honneur from the Government of France, and the signature red dress. There could only ever be one Valentino Garavani. Through his career, the Valentino woman has remained refined, elegant and the epitome of classic beauty. Whether experimenting with the aesthetic of Russian princess, flamenco goddess or Royal majesty Valentino has remained a master Couturier. Italian by birth, Valentino moved to Paris at seventeen to formally study fashion design. Employing the illustrious house of Lesage for both haute couture and ready-to-wear collections, he regularly showed his collections in Paris. Garavani’s signature colour could sum up the man himself; passionate, and show-stopping. Valentino red, as it came to be called, was featured in nearly all of his shows. If, like most of Paris’s oldest fashion houses, the Valentino label continues through the work of a younger designer, they will certainly have great shoes to fill. Farewell to an admirable man, the most exquisite career and that most enviable luxury only Valentino could offer. VIVA | VALENTINO COURTESY FROM TOP CLOCKWISE: VALENTINO; KARL LAGERFELD, MARC BERTRAND, PVC; RAY BAN K Often when our favourite international designers develop lower priced (and more accessible) clothing lines, Canadians (especially Calgarians) are usually left out in the cold. In early 2008, however, K, Karl Lagerfeld will be launched in Canada among only a few countries worldwide. Lagerfeld, the arguable King of fashion offers his signature lithesome silhouettes and slim tailoring in denim, jackets, tshirts and knitwear in a mostly graphic black and white colour palette. Branded under the Tommy Hilfiger conglomerate, combined with Karl’s cult-like status, the K collection will be an undeniable success. The collection debuts in January. www.karllagerfeld.com I wear my Sunglasses at Night Andy Warhol pop art and graphic silhouettes were strewn across the Spring 2008 catwalks. The essence of the trend? Bold colours, and geometric prints. The essential item? The classic 1950 Ray Ban Wayfarer. Originally worn by James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Bob Dylan, hipsters like Chloë Sevigny,Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Casiraghi reintroduced the sunglasses for today’s stylish set. Forget the oversized pair, the wayfarers are the modern answer to update your look. The secret to updating the classic? Colour. Forget basic black, try a pair in red, blue or white. www.ray-ban.com K Karl Lagerfeld HISTORY LESSON If you are interested in Haute Couture or beauty of any kind, Christian Lacroix might be one of the best teachers. From November 8-April 20 2008, The Musée de la Mode et du Textile in Paris will be showing a collection of haute couture pieces, which was curated by Mr. Lacroix himself. The designer did his research, studying la mode for over a year to help build the collection, selecting the perfect pieces to imbue his vision of fashion over the past centuries. As a master of colour, whimsy and construction, the collection is sure to be candy for the eyes.
