City Style and Living - Winter 2007/2008 - (Page 30) City Stle & Living FASHION FASHION | ADVENTURE Growing up in Calgary, one grows accustomed to certain rights of passage when the winds start shifting to the winter months. Almost guaranteed, as the first signs of winter approach around the end of October, primed to nip at the heels of young trick-or-treaters, out come the kids with their bulky winter coats under what was at one time a beloved Disney character, or superhero. You can ask any child who attempted this feat, or witness the number of children each year on the streets of Calgary—the most unquestionably cruel reminder of the reality of Calgary weather —thick puffer jackets bulging underneath Halloween costumes. Everywhere, you see them. You can’t help but smile at the poor things because every day for six months out of the year, most of us face the exact same challenge: How do you remain chic and stylish when the mercury dips below zero? Invest in a Good Coat The obvious and easiest option is to invest in a structured coat with some element of detail- a belt, oversized buttons, embellishment, or pattern. Avoid silhouettes that are overly boxy, and opt for tailoring that flatters your shape. This might include nipped waists for women, emphasized by a belt, or the seaming of the coat. Longer coats cut above the knees are flattering for most. Bomber, or ‘puffer jackets’ flatter most men’s frames, but it is key to purchase coats which are not too oversized (aspiring rap stars may ignore this suggestion). At Balenciaga Men, trapper hats in wool and fur were presented; Paul Smith showed knitted caps and plenty of toques. There truly is a hat for everyone, so try one on, for fashion and for function. Any or all of these suggestions will make a statement and refresh your outlook. And when you awake and look out of your window to find five inches of freshly fallen snow on the ground, winter just might have you saying “pass the shovel, I’m ready for anything”! Thankfully, spring 2007 introduced more hats on the runway (cleverly commenced by the jew30 | WINTER 2007/2008 | citystyleandliving.com SEE OUR PICKS FOR THE MOST STYLISH COATS FOR WINTER 2007 (RESOURCE GUIDE P. 54) Two looks from Banana Republic COURTESY BANANA REPUBLIC Most of us have at least one black coat in our wardrobe. But the surest way to feel the winter blahs is to sport shades of dull grey or black. Although this is a good base palette to play with, liven up by adding simple, colourful accessories. After all, the dame of fashion, Coco Chanel, said, “the best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” Stefano Pilati’s men’s Fall 2007 runway was packed with brightly coloured leather ‘man totes’. Colour has become the new black over the past few seasons. Both men and women can drape a beautiful scarf around the neck in a bold colour. This is a classic way to stand out amid the sea of noir. http://citystyleandliving.com
