City Style and Living - Winter 2007/2008 - (Page 33) gladiator sandals remained in the 2008 resort collection. While ready-to-wear collections are directional, resort wear will always be tamer and the prime selling point of the clothing is ease. Though, as is always the case in fashion, ideas that are developed in resort wear collections can be a starting point for designers future ready to wear shows. Take for example Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2007 ready to wear collection - among the knee length pencil skirts in wools, furs and crêpe de chine, there was a marked emphasis on the waist with sharp pops of colour. This was carried through to the Spring 2008 resort collections, which followed the direction of colour, and length introduced in the Fall, injecting a more youthful fresh colour palette of reds, indigo and yellow, in diaphanous chiffons and silks. Brian Reyes muted metallics for Fall 2007 included a loose fitting silhouette, rounded out by Reyes signature tulip skirts and slim bodice. Almost to a tee, Brian Reyes puttytoned Resort collection elaborated on the relaxed columnar shape, but, as Resort Wear is practical, Reyes did away with the delicate draping seen in the Fall collection. These directional collections are in contrast to Michael Kors tried and true formula of chiffon caftans, Yves Saint Laurent (circa 1968 ) inspired safari dress, and bold printed bikinis strewn together with chunky gold chains (seen in Mr. Kors’ Spring 2008 Resort collection). Ralph Lauren, too seemed to know exactly what his customer desired, offering an abbreviated collection (11 outfits) which could all be bought and easily packed away for a week’s jaunt to Ibiza. Whatever the reason designers choose to produce resort wear collections, the little known season is proving to be both viable and a way for designers to showcase their talent and push forward new ideas and concepts. The good news for consumers? Resort wear is yet another choice - a way to infuse a little excitement and colour into a blah Winter wardrobe and to get us all excited about what is coming for Spring. Resort 2007 was a continuation of his signature billowy silhouette and ease of fabrication- perfect for an exotic trip. With a background in architecture, Som’s Spring resort 2008 collection featured sculptural shapes and metallic skyscraper shades of grey, slate and putty. His Spring 2008 collection that followed, kept with the muted tones, and simple shapes, with a focus on the waist.
