City Style and Living - Winter 2007/2008 - (Page 7) Inside City Style & Living What is your Ewan Nicholson has a passion for photography. His editorial and commercial photography has been seen across Western Canada and has even won an award or two. Ewan brings to every assignment his unique mix of technical mastery and creative vision that is peculiarly suited to working in Calgary. He has found his calling in the world of commercial and editorial photography, but brings with him insight & perspective born from a degree in applied physics, a career in petroleum engineering and co-founding a business consultancy modelled on Olympian achievement. He has the best job in the world. A: My fondest winter memory has happened in many places but the circumstances have always been the same - flying almost weightless and utterly giddy through steep, deep, dry powder snow. Robyn Lee: works in New York City as an editorial assistant at Serious Eats (www.seriouseats.com) and documents her excessive eating on her food blog, The Girl Who Ate Everything (www.roboppy.net/food). She spent a semester studying in Paris where she spent a large chunk of her time eating at boulangeries and patisseries learning about the properties of a perfect baguette and macaroon. Many baguettes and macaroons gave their lives for this cause. A: Waking up early in the morning to find out that school has been canceled due to four feet of snow falling overnight has always been a good thing. Because I hated school so very much. Ha ha! Wes Hanson: is a Professor of Biology at Southern Nazarene University (Bethany, Oklahoma), Director of the Department’s Quetzal Education Research Center (San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica), and a molecular biologist by trade. He and his wife, Jeanette, have two grown daughters, Krista and Alicia. Wes has had a passion for plants and animals since he potted and collected his first plant specimen at the age of three -poison ivy, that his mother had pointed out to stay away from! Since then, photography has allowed him a better way to continue his collection and study of nature: small to large, safe and poisonous, and common to rare. A: I grew up in Northwestern Minnesota where it seemed to be cold and windy all the time, and I never really had a fond winter memory until Jeanette and I moved to Idaho and took up cross country skiing. Cross country skiing allowed us to get into nature and to see areas that we could not normally get to. Derrick Woo: Born and raised in Calgary, Derrick is a systems administrator/programmer by trade. Photography began as a hobby for him a few years ago, and as his skills grew, so did his interest in it. Derrick has recently begun venturing into contract and freelance work. A: I was probably 11 or 12 when my friends and their father invited me to go downhill sledding with them. I had never been before, but it sounded exciting. It was a long time ago and the details are vague but there are two things that still stand out from that brisk winter afternoon: how wet my pants were and good the hot chocolate tasted. Caley Marie: is a Calgary-based Make up Artist and Hair Stylist, at Artists Within, Artist Management. “I truly love my job. To be able to create is exciting! It’s all about enhancing one’s natural beauty and easing people out of their comfort zone.” A: My fondest winter memory would be me, as a kid, horseback riding in the deep snow. Looking back, there was something magical about the remoteness of the north and the thick, frosty coat of my horse, Willow. citystyleandliving.com | WINTER 2007/2008 | 7 Fondest Contributors Winter memory? http://www.seriouseats.com http://www.seriouseats.com http://www.roboppy.net/food http://citystyleandliving.com
