Wind C-Kers A small shop with unique gifts and a welcoming atmosphere that has proved a lifesaver on many occasions for last minute kids birthday gifts and special presents for teachers is WindC-Kers. The fact that it is in the neighbourhood, easy to get to, and has a wide variety of gifts from expensive to reasonably priced is helpful. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: COURTESY: GIRL GUIDES OF CANADA; DAIRY QUEEN (2); FRIENDS OF FISH CREEK PARK SOCIETY I enjoy the variety of restaurants available in the Shawnessy area, but a favorite for my husband and I is Mimosa Restaurant which serves Vietnamese food. The restaurant has a cozy, comfortable atmosphere and also does great takeout. After a long day, barbequed chicken on rice vermicelli with spring rolls is a welcome treat. 31-275 Shawville Boulevard SE, (403) 256-6296 4. Mimosa Restaurant 5. Calgary Public Library 333 Shawville Blvd. SE , (403) 260-2600 My favorite thing about living in this neighbourhood for nearly 25 years has been the experience of watching it grow and change as my family did. When my children were small we visited the Shawnessy Community Association for many activities including the programs offered by Girl Guides of Canada (www.girlguides.ca). We hiked and biked along the local trails that lead through the neighbourhood and to all the attractions of close-by Fish Creek Park. We watched horses run through the fields adjacent to Shawnessy Boulevard and collected tadpoles for school science projects from the nearby sloughs. Today, the neighbourhood provides education and job opportunities for young adults, fitness facilities to keep us healthy and active, and lots of recreational opportunities to keep us from being bored. Through all of this, Shawnessy has maintained it’s ‘small-town’ feel. Everywhere I go in the neighbourhood, despite how we have grown, I still run into old friends and neighbours that gather at our favorite community spots! Shaw 16 ville e nu ve 2A Blvd S.E.. S.E . Va un S y lle Blvd S.E. #100, 333, Shawville Blvd, S.E., (403) 201-8652 Everyone in Shawnessy was thrilled when the new South Fish Creek Recreation Complex opened up. A ride along one of our many bike paths in the area takes you to this jointly-owned complex that houses everything a family could want in recreational and cultural activities. The complex holds regular seasonal events that involves all the partners, including the Library. These are free events for families that include entertainment and treats for the kids and adults. Watch for announcements at the Library around major holidays such as Christmas, Halloween, Spring, and Stampede. 2. South Fish Creek Recreation Complex The Shawnessy branch of the Calgary Public Library offers books, DVDs, music CDs, and more for residents of all ages. The Library’s also a great place for free programming -- storytimes for children, interesting leisure-time programs for adults, as well as classes for English speakers new to the community. With the YMCA and the ice rinks available all in the same space there is no reason for not staying active, at any age. Having a high school that my children could attend right down the hall meant nothing could be more convenient. w Sha Le Mc il Tra od . S.E vill eB lvd . S. Dairy Queen The District Shawnessy For years our family, like many others in the neighbourhood, has headed to the local Dairy Queen (www.dairyqueen.com) for ice cream treats. We like that we can sit outside in the warm weather, or inside if we need air conditioning on really hot days. This is a favorite spot for soccer and baseball teams, after special events such as graduation - and Grandma and Grandpa love it too, especially the Buster bars! Your essential guide to the neighbourhood One of the best perks of living in Shawnessy is being surrounded by the lush environment of Fish Creek Park, spanning 1 348 hectares, where is not uncommon to see deer, rabbits, birds and other woodland creatures. Several archaeological sites in the park date back 8 000 years, and Fish Creek houses many important settler houses. To promotes responsible use, encourage public education about the environment and give communities the opportunity to be involved in their local parks, The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society, a volunteer based organization, was established in 1992. The Society hosts many events throughout the year like the annual Fish Creek clean-up in May and the Purge the Spurge in June. The Friends of Fish Creek also offer monthly Speaker Series, where guest speakers inform the public on a wide range of topics including history, biology and photography and archaeology. During the winter, the best reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship is witnessing a family deer, appearing unexpectedly in your backyard.
