Waterfront communities in Chatham-Kent are the ports of entry to world-class sport and game fishing. Anglers can catch their choice of fish that are exceptional in quality, abundance and size on either shore of Lake Erie or Lake St. Clair. The most productive fresh water lake in the world, Lake Erie is accessible from the harbours at Wheatley and Erieau. Not far from shore, anglers can catch an abundance of pickerel and rainbow trout. This is one of the few regions in Ontario where both species are plentiful. The size of catch is equally impressive: rainbow trout are averaging seven to eight pounds, weighing up to 20 pounds; pickerel are averaging three to four pounds and can weigh up to 10 pounds. The warmer, shallower Lake St. Clair offers first-class fishing for large and smallmouth bass, pickerel and trophy-size muskie. Sheltered areas and tributaries provide great fishing on this lake any time of year. For up to eight weeks, Mitchell’s Bay in Chatham-Kent is the popular destination for perch ice fishing.
