Chatham-Kent Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 55) Walpole Island (Bkejwanong Territory) is nestled between Ontario, Canada and Michigan, USA on the north shores of Lake St. Clair. Occupied by aboriginal people for thousands of years, it is today home to the Ojibwe, Pottawatomi and Odawa people. Having a common heritage, they formed the Council of Three Fires – a political and cultural compact that has survived the test of time. Walpole Island is blessed with unique ecosystems including one of the richest and most diverse wetlands remaining in the Great Lakes basin. These wetlands are centred in the middle of two international migrating waterfowl flyways and form the economic base of the community through recreational hunting and fishing. Walpole Island is also home to other ecologically significant natural areas, such as Carolinian forests, tall grass prairies, and oak savannas that support over 50 of Canada’s rare and endangered plants and animals. Citizens of this First Nation, incredibly, can still support their families through hunting, fishing, trapping, and guiding activities. Come take a step back in our country’s history and join us in celebrating the abundance of natural areas and wildlife. Many services are available to outdoor/nature enthusiasts, such as guided waterfowl hunting, chartered fishing expeditions, and guided nature tours and bird watching.
