Driving The main arteries of central Kingston are akin to the spokes of a wheel, radiating out from the waterfront, and it takes only a short time to learn to navigate the city by car. In the downtown area, most street parking is regulated by a “pay and display” system for which coins and credit cards are accepted. Municipal parking garages are free for the first hour. Overnight parking (1 a.m. to 7 a.m.) is not permitted on city streets between December 1 and March 31. Tickets can be paid online at www.cityofkingston.ca. Unless a sign indicates otherwise, you may turn right on a red light after coming to a complete stop and waiting until the way is clear. You may also turn left on a red light if you are moving from a one-way street onto a one-way street, but you must come to a complete stop first and wait until the way is clear. Information on new traffic lights and major re-routing due to construction is posted on the city’s website. For provincial highway conditions, including winter road reports, call 1800-268-4686 or visit www.mto.gov. on.ca/english/traveller/conditions/. FROM NINE TO FIVE Kingston offers a unique and enviable lifestyle, whether you are moving to Kingston as the result of an independent business decision or a corporate transfer, or to enjoy your retirement. Chosen by The Globe and Mail Report on Business as "one of Canada’s best cities in which to live and do business," Kingston is attracting companies who recognize the many advantages of the smaller city environment. The city is easily accessible, located midway between Canada’s two major business centres, Montreal and Toronto, and equidistant from both Ottawa and Syracuse, NY. Large public-sector employers such as the Department of National Defence, Queen’s University, Kingston General Hospital, the Limestone District School Board and the Correctional Services of Canada anchor Kingston’s economic base. In the private sector, Kingston is home to companies such as StarTek, Novelis, Invista, Kosa, Assurant, DuPont, Open Text Corporation, Bombardier and Bosal. Kingston’s average unemployment rate is 5.6 per cent, below the Canadian rate of 6.2 per 2008/2009 RELOCATION GUIDE 1 7 http://www.viarail.ca http://www.cityofkingston.ca http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/conditions/ http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/conditions/ http://www.providencecare.ca http://www.providencecare.ca
