Tourism Victoria Lobsterpalooza 2008 brochure - (Page 6) North Shore If Cape Breton is the jewel of the North Atlantic, the North Shore is certainly a jewel of the Cabot Trail. The North Shore, running the North edge of St. Ann’s Bay is the halfway point between Baddeck and Ingonish on the world famous Cabot Trail. It begins at Jersey Cove when you cross the cable ferry at Englishtown on route 312, or at Barrachois bridge on the Cabot Trail and continues to the base of Smokey Mountain. The North Shore has a rich history of the Gaelic language and traditions including milling frolics. The North Shore Gaelic Singers were world reknown and the Gaelic culture is celebrated at the renamed Gaelic Singers Hall (formerly Alexander Smith Hall). It has one of the oldest milling tables on Cape Breton Island - over 100 years old. New road signage in the area denotes the Gaelic names as well as English. The people of the North Shore are proud of their rich heritage with the fishing industry dating back to the 1800’s. Generations of Fishermen have worked the Coast line - most of them directly in front of their own homes. People can visit the Little River Wharf on Little River Road and see Lobster landed there there is also a beautiful beach on either side of the wharf area. At low tide it is a marvelous walk. Many other interesting people call the North Shore home having settled in this beautiful area and established studios, B&Bs and Inns and a cafe. You may hear local people say “down north”, a term left over from the days of sailing ships when vessels were carried North by the winds of the Gulf Stream. During Lobsterpalooza the North Shore comes alive with the springtime – scheduling many food and music based celebrations.
