Getting in the swing of things In early April, the phone starts to ring and ring at city golf courses. The snow has melted, and anxious players can’t wait to hit the links. Mark Vainio, golf operations and marketing manager for Golf Sudbury, expects, with a little bit of luck, golfers will be out on the fairways by the end of April. Last year Cedar Green Golf Club opened April 20. Timberwolf Golf Club opened a week later. The courses closed at the end of October. Vainio represents four clubs: Stonehill (formerly the Highland) on Silver Lake Rd.; Pine Grove on Highway 69 S.; Cedar Green in Garson; and Timberwolf on Maley Dr. The courses are owned by the Yawney family. “We try to cater to everyone,” Vainio said. The four courses offer a variety of challenges. Golf Sudbury offers flexible membership plans. Members of Timberwolf, for example, have playing privileges at the other Golf Sudbury courses. Timberwolf, which opened in 2000, was designed by Thomas McBroom. It won the best new golf course in Canada award. McBroom is one of the country’s top golf course architects. The 18-hole course combines generous fairways and strategically protected greens for a challenging game. It is set in a northern wilderness of natural streams, wetlands, and dense poplar and white birch forest. Timberwolf, a 7,126 yard, par 72 course, was rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest in 2006. Vainio advises keen players to start practising now at the indoor driving range at Discount Golf Supercentre, located next to Timberwolf. Tom Clarke, the pro at Timberwolf, teaches classes and private lessons. The Tom Clarke Golf School for men and women, operated under the auspices of the city’s leisure services’ department, runs from the end of April to mid-May at Timberwolf. Private and semi-private (two people) coaching packages are available now. For more information, phone 691-6019.
