Sudbury Living - Spring 2008 - (Page 54) calendar of events SPRING 2008 Canada’s songbird Anne Murray will make a stop in Sudbury, May 19 on her Coastto-Coast One Last Time Canadian Tour. The tour will begin in Moncton, N.B., in April, work its way across Canada to Victoria, B.C., and then head back across Canada ending in Toronto May 23. Murray’s Sudbury appearance at Sudbury Arena is sold out, but sometimes there are last-minute tickets available on the day of the concert. FAMILY FUN Science North is all wet this spring and summer with its WaterWorks: Soak Up the Science exhibits. The design of this 6,000 square foot exhibition allows visitors to work with water, harness its power and grasp its importance in everyday lives – without wasting a drop. The exhibit complements the new IMAX film Mysteries of the Great Lakes, which will open May 5. Science North will host a gala premiere of Mysteries of the Great Lakes, May 3 at 7:30 pm. Phone 523-IMAX. and Mozart. This concert will feature two of Canada’s most exciting young voices as guest artists: soprano Kristin Mueller-Heaslip and mezzo soprano Erin Lawson. Blues for Food will take place downtown Saturday, June 21. It is hosted by the Rotary Club of Sudbury and Downtown Sudbury. Northern Lights Festival Boreal will take place July 4, 5 and 6 at Bell Park. visitors are encouraged to submit their Sudbury lake photos in five categories: spring, summer, fall, winter, and youth (under 18). MUSIC The final concert of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s 2007/08 season will take place Saturday, April 5. Guest artist David Rogers will perform Broadway favourites. The SSO concert will take place at the Glad Tidings Auditorium on Regent St. The concert will begin at 8 pm. Phone 673-1280 for tickets. Live Nation will present Blue Rodeo at the Sudbury Arena. Friday, April 18 at 7:30 pm. Betty & The Bobs, a seven-piece Toronto band featuring Wendell Ferguson, David Woodhead, Katherine Wheatley, Suzie Vinnick, Dave Matheson (of Moxy Fruvous), Soozie Schlanger on violin and Rich Greenspoon on drums will perform at the annual benefit concert for Northern Ontario Families of Children With Cancer. The final Silver Birch Concert of the season will be held Saturday, May 1 at 8 pm at St. Peter’s United Church, 203 York St. The concert will feature beautiful chamber music for voices and strings, including works by Respighi THEATRE Sudbury Theatre Centre will present The Buddy Holly Story from May 1 to May 24. Theatre Cambrian’s next musical production, Bye Bye Birdie, tells the story of a rock ‘n’ roll singer Conrad Birdie who is about to be inducted into the army. Any resemblance to Elvis is purely intentional. Bye Bye Birdie will open May 13 and run until May 24 at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium. United Way presents The Be A Goddess event, May 8 at the Caruso Club. All proceeds from the event are allocated to women’s programs and services. Last year 500 women raised more than $40,000 while being pampered. Doors will open at 3 pm for the spa services. The main event with dinner and fashion show will start at 6 pm.
