T Getaways: South In 2006 the $5.5-million French River Visitor Centre opened. Admission is free. Don’t plan just a 10-minute washroom stop. The centre tells the fascinating story of the river, the early explorers, missionaries, fur traders, and pioneer families. The Voices of the River are recordings in English, French and Ojibwa of people reading journals and recollections. Bring your camera to take breathtaking photographs as you walk across the observation bridge over the river. Farther down Highway 69 S., Parry Sound awaits your arrival. A favourite among scuba divers, these local waters have buried and preserved countless treasures in a silent graveyard of sunken ships. The area offers tremendous opportunities for sailing, cruising, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. You are also welcome to take a self-guided tour through the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. The Festival of the Sound runs from July 18 to Aug. 10. This spectacularly popular summer music event features some of the North America’s finest musicians such as Peter Appleyard, Phil Nimmons, Gene DiNovi and James Campbell. This summer more than 200 artists from three continents perform in over 50 concerts of chamber, orchestral, choral, opera and jazz music. Event organizers have also scheduled a number of musician talks, open rehearsals, lectures and interviews to be held at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. The 480-seat Festival Performance Hall is located on waterfront property with a breathtaking view of Georgian Bay. Part of the Charles W. Stockey Centre is the hockey museum, featuring Bobby Orr, a native of Parry Sound.
