Imagine the cool, pine-scented refreshment of a Muskoka woodland, or the exotic fauna and wildlife of a Carolinian forest. It’s all within easy driving distance in Malahide. Your adventure begins as you drive south from the 401 on Elgin Road which gives way to Imperial Road at the gateway to Malahide. Turn left on Avon Drive and discover Lake Whittaker Conservation Area with walking trails, campsites and natural beauty. Continuing south on Imperial Road to College Line a left turn will bring you into a time capsule as you enter an Old Order Amish community where the residents live and work without use of modern conveniences, including electricity. Visitors are welcomed and farm-gate shopping is encouraged. South of College Line on Hacienda Road is the Ontario Police College and adjoining Aylmer Wildlife Centre, a stopping point for migrating Tundra Swans. Back on Imperial Road, you can visit a fully operational apiary where you can shop or visit a bee education centre housed in heritage buildings. At Rogers Road, turn left to where a quaint tearoom and pottery studio serves visitors in a peaceful oasis of tall pines surrounding a scenic pond. A short distance away is Springwater Conservation Area with established walking trails, campsites and picnic pavillions in a Carolinian forest canopy. Further south on Imperial Road, a right turn at Sparta Line takes you to the historic Village of Sparta with a myriad of shops selling preserves, candles and original art. Before reaching Lake Erie, a short drive easterly on Nova Scotia Line will bring the visitor to the first of the giant wind turbines, generating environmentally friendly power. Imperial Road ends at Port Bruce, the popular Lake Erie boating and fishing destination on the south shore and home to wonderful sunsets in any season. A non-stop journey from north to south Malahide takes under an hour but will leave a timeless memory of a diversity of cultures mixed with a harmonious blend of man-made and natural attractions. alahide Visit www.township.malahide.on.ca for more information on Malahide, or call 519-773-5344.
