Aylmer and District Museum By Doug Avram AYLMER –In 2007, the Aylmer and District Museum, located at 14 East Street in Aylmer, celebrated its 30th anniversary. The museum that opened its doors Dec. 17, 1977, is a far cry from the museum that invites visitors to its exhibits today. Over the years it has undergone many changes. The collection, managed by the museum, has grown from a few hundred artifacts to nearly 20,000. The collections are showcased thematically throughout the museum’s year. Each year the museum features four different exhibitions, public fundraising events such as our Annual Tour of Homes held every November, bus trips to other places, luncheons and other activities for people of all ages. Two permanent galleries at the Museum are The General Store and The Ron White Native Collection consisting of locally found artifacts, including The Pound Site. In order to effectively manage and showcase the collection, the museum relies on a dedicated group of volunteers, students and financial partners under the guidance of curator Pat Zimmer. An important aspect to the Aylmer and District Museum is the educational component that presents lessons to students in the area to enhance the understanding of local heritage and history. Another important aspect is the historical research the museum undertakes to inform people of their local heritage through publications in The Aylmer Express newspaper. A community museum housing collections donated by area residents which are utilized in changing gallery displays and thematic exhibitions through the year, programs and lessons throughout our operating year which runs usually from early March to late November. There is a $10 fee to access the museum’s archives by appointment with the curator or by contacting us by mail, telephone or email.
