In 2002, it was designated as an historic site. Built in 1840, this lighthouse has been a beacon and landmark for sailors, seeking shelter from the violent storms that can suddenly occur on lake erie. the lighthouse’s history includes the Sutherland family who earned widespread recognition as light keepers for over a century. After guiding countless ships to safety and witnessing frequent shipwrecks, the light was taken out of official service in 1963. Adjacent to the lighthouse that serves as the tourist information centre are the anchors from the schooner Nimrod that sank after colliding with another ship in the fog off Port Bruce. Craftsmen from a nearby Mennonite community using the same hand tools and building techniques by which the lighthouse was originally built, renovated the lighthouse in 1986. Visitors can climb to the top for a spectacular view of the harbour, lake and village.the Marine Museum is staffed by local volunteers and students who keep the traditions and history of their village alive. the museum is open mid May to labour Day.
