The UPS Store Welcomes T he familiar fleet of brown UPS trucks is now a regular sight throughout the Okanagan. In January of this year, UPS Canada opened a 16,500 sq ft sorting facility in Kelowna and brought with it a fleet of 17 trucks. The UPS facility has a sorting capacity of 4,000 packages per day, allowing UPS to maintain reliable service levels well into the future. At the Kelowna International Airport, UPS continues to have daily planes in and out, using independent contractors. “Business in the Okanagan Valley is really doing well,” comments Duane Ophus, owner of one of The UPS Stores in Kelowna. “One of the offshoots of that is a tremendous increase in the amount of shipping and courier services. With the resources of the world’s largest package delivery company, UPS, and the accessibility of business services offered by The UPS Store, businesses in Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley are well positioned to service their customers and continue to prosper.” The UPS Store, which has found a niche supporting small businesses in the Valley, provides business and delivery solutions for customers. It is Canada’s largest network of owner-operated business service centres. There are more than 340 nation- BROWN TO TOWN wide and is part of a worldwide network of more than 5,900 centres. In addition to courier services, the chain is also recognized as Canada’s largest chain of franchised print and document centres. According to Ophus, two of the growing areas of service for local The UPS Store centres are in freight and in overnight couriers, which means greater volume and activity at Kelowna International. “Air is the best choice for any customers shipping fragile and costly items,” adds Ophus. “Just by the nature of sorting hubs, a package can be handled up to 20 times when it’s sent by ground. When it’s sent by air, the handling time is greatly reduced – usually the package is only handled about six times – so it’s a much better option for expensive or fragile items.” Kelowna is the third largest metropolitan area in British Columbia and the largest in the interior. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in North America. Recognizing that, UPS, is one of the fastest growing transportation companies in the world, has made a significant investment in the BC Interior and is one of the Kelowna Airport’s largest users. Together with The UPS Store, UPS will continue to grow, and help Okanagan business grow locally and internationally. n SUMMER 2008 21
