Yukon 2008 Vacation Planner - (Page 22) Southern Lakes Headwaters of tHe Yukon river The Southern Lakes network of waterways forms the headwaters of the Yukon River. This vast system drains more than half the Yukon Territory and much of Alaska and flows into the Bering Sea. Over 100 years ago, this area featured prominently in the Klondike Gold Rush, when stampeders travelled the Chilkoot Trail, rafted across lakes and prospected for gold along the way. Southern Tutchone and Tagish-speaking people of the interior traditionally traded with coastal Tlingit people over the mountain passes. The Southern Lakes region is the home of the Teslin Tlingit Council and the Carcross/Tagish, Kwanlin Dun and Taku River Tlingit First Nations. above: Overlooking Carcross and Bennett Lake – YG (R.
