Yukon 2008 Vacation Planner - (Page 63) S ilver Trail take time to explore Moose Country Watch for moose! The first 15 km of the Silver Trail past Stewart Crossing is a protected moose calving area. Slow down and watch for moose that frequent the swampy meadows bordering the Silver Trail. Duncan Creek loop Don’t go back the way you came—visit Keno City and then circle back to Mayo via the Duncan Creek Loop. This is a maintained gravel road passable to most vehicles. Check for road conditions in Mayo or Keno City before travelling. Mayo riverfront Here visitors find viewing platforms, a commemorative cairn and riverfront trails along the Mayo and Stewart rivers. The 2.5-km Prince of Wales Trail starts at Binet House Interpretive Centre and connects to the TransCanada Trail system. In summer, the Stewart Landing floatplane base located upriver from the village is busy with float planes ferrying travellers to and from the backcountry. old Mayo village The First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun is doing ongoing restoration work at its old village site across the Stewart River, with tours planned for the future. A good spot to view the village is from a bench overlooking the site just before Mayo. Ask at the Binet House Interpretive Centre for directions. Sign Post on Keno Summit – YG (Brian Atkinson) Village of Mayo on the Stewart River – YG (EMR Inspections) events Mayo Midnight Marathon June 21, 2008 Celebrating summer solstice and the longest day of the year, this legendary race starts at 11:45 p.m. in the middle of the Northern “night.” Participants are greeted by the rising sun as they run along the Silver Trail Highway toward Mayo; in a midnight glow, it’s a magical time to run or walk. Race distances include 10 km, half marathon and marathon.
