The Daymon Difference - Winter 2008/2009 - (Page 3) editor’s page The Star Fish Loren Eisley, a respected anthropologist and science writer, told how he was walking along the ocean’s edge just before sunrise one day when he noticed a youth, “bending and reaching and flailing arms, dancing on the beach, no doubt.” But as he approached, he realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but rather bending to sift through the debris left by the night’s tide, stopping now and then to pick up a starfish and heave it back into the sea. The youth said the tide had washed the starfish onto the beach, “and they cannot return to the sea by themselves. When the sun rises, they will die, unless I throw them back.” Starfish littered the shore in hopeless numbers, prompting the anthropologist to offer: “Surely there are more starfish on this beach than you can ever save before the sun is up. Surely you cannot expect to make a difference.” Undeterred, the youth picked up another starfish and threw it back into the ocean as far as possible. “I made a difference to that one,” the youth said. So, to make a short story long, that’s what this new iteration of The Daymon Difference is all about: making a difference one starfish at a time, or one shaved head at a time, or one tree planting at time, or raising one dollar at time. It’s about Daymon associates contributing to make the world a better place. It’s about great people doing great stuff. This is not about “news,” you can read the Wall Street Journal or, even better, DayNews for that. It’s not about brokerage or demos or design. But it is about brokerage and demo and design associates doing excellent things that are noble and fun and in general good for humanity and/or the environment. It’s going to come out once a quarter in this neat “magic book” format. Feel free to share it with your friends and family; your business partners, your barber and your butcher. After all, it’s available for the whole world to see on the Daymon.com public web site. And do one more thing – get yourself or one of your Daymon pals in the next issue of The Daymon Difference: Great people doing great things.
