John Muir Health Progress Report 2006/2007 - (Page 3) First, John Muir Health is a not-for-profit organization. This is a key differentiator for us in a world of increasingly profit-driven healthcare. Our primary focus is delivering positive patient outcomes. We certainly work hard to run this organization efficiently, and that has prompted us to invest in systems and technology that help us provide the highest quality, safety, and best treatment options for our patients. In just the past few years, we have made significant investments in innovative new technologies, from the daVinci® surgical robot (used in minimally invasive surgeries of the chest, radical prostatectomies and other laparoscopic surgeries) to our Novalis® Shaped Beam radiosurgery tool (non-surgical outpatient treatment for cancerous and non-cancerous conditions of the brain, spine and vital organs) to our Abiomed AB5000™ Ventricular Assist Device (provides temporary support for one or both sides of the heart in circumstances where heart failure has occurred). Also, this organization is governed locally. Our operations are entirely here in Contra Costa County (though of course we serve individuals from surrounding areas). Our board of directors, physicians and nurses, and employees are members of the same community as the patients they serve, meaning that financial and strategic decisions are driven by local needs and goals. At John Muir Health we take pride in the fact that as a team, our focus has always been on quality, safety and exceptional service. And, we are pleased that not only does our local community acknowledge our excellence as a high-quality healthcare provider, but so do numerous national organizations.
