John Muir Health Progress Report 2006/2007 - (Page 7) early as two weeks versus six weeks for traditional open heart surgery.” Dr. Dhillon agrees, and cites the Abiomed AB5000, an advanced “ventricular assist device” as an important new advancement in the cardiac surgery program. “This is a remarkable piece of medical technology,” he says. “It is an external pump that essentially takes over much of the heart’s work when it has been damaged or is in a weakened state after a heart attack or disease or in the wake of surgery. If given enough time, the cells of the heart can repair themselves and the heart may recover its normal function.” Both physicians say that these kinds of innovations are becoming almost expected at John Muir. “Professional leadership is a deeply ingrained part of the culture of this organization,” says Dr. Kamlot. “It’s certainly a major reason why Jatinder and I practice here, and it’s a major reason why we are able to exceed patient expectations on a regular basis.” 7
