Daryl Sattui is following in that tradition, but on an unprecedented scale: He’s built an elaborate Italian-style castle in the hills of Calistoga. Castello di Amorosa, which opened in April after 14 years in the making, may be the biggest tourist attraction ever built in Napa Valley. It’s also a dream fulfilled for Sattui, who owns V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena and has long wanted to pay tribute to his Italian ancestry. And he succeeded: The $30 million, 107-room edifice—complete with turrets, moat, and dungeons—would look at home on any Italian hilltop or in a fantasy film. “We even have a torture chamber,” Sattui says, “including an authentic iron maiden.” Hidden inside the massive stone structure is a state-of-the-art winery that produces Cabernet, Chardonnay, and other Napa stars.
