we love this! 014 Crazy Chic I T IS A NATURAL word association: kids-toys, toys-kids, right? So what better way to infuse fun and innovation into a luxury children's clothing store than to use a toy for inspiration? Four Lau and Sam Sum of AS Design Service Ltd. looked to the children's toy "Crazy Forts" to help retailer UM Junior make an impactful statement at the Shoppes at Cotai Central in Macau. Among a collection of world-renowned luxury children's boutiques, such as Armani Junior and Ralph Lauren Kids, the designers felt this unique construction toy, which is made of a ball feeder and connecting rods, would be an innovative approach to present the UM Junior brand. "Creating a good looking store, one that focuses on the brand's personality and offers a sense of style, is the basic requirement. The most important thing in children's luxury, though, is to infuse originality into the space," says Lau, creative director for AS Design Service Ltd. The Crazy Forts-inspired structures were used to activate the whole space and create a setting that inspires creativity. The enlarged scale and luxurious gold finish against a backdrop of white and natural materials results in an eye-catching retail area that makes this approximately 1,076-sq.-ft. store an impressive focal point within the shopping mall. "We created a large-scale art installation, which cannot be imitated by other kidswear brands," Lau says. "It successfully embeds a deep impression of UM Junior." Display space and interior detailing intertwine to create a visual jungle gym that encourages exploration, imagination and creativity. - Jenny S.
