backstory 096 M AKING A BOLD statement that sets you apart from the competition is paramount for mall-based stores-and that's exactly what Jigsaw accomplished with its first mall-based location in London's Westfield, which features an eye-catching sculptural installation. Jigsaw teamed up with U.K.-based design agency Checkland Kindleysides to create the new concept and add personality to the blank, characterless space by creating an architectural moment rooted in the Jigsaw brand values. "The concept for the structure initially came from a series of pencil sketches, as an instinctive spatial response to the site," says Joe Evans, creative director of Checkland Kindleysides. "We looked at attributes of the space to create a unique singular architectural statement, which would provide a backdrop and experience that would resonate with the brand and customer. " The design team researched everything from contemporary British design, art and architecture to the craft of tailoring, fabric and fashion as inspiration. After envisioning bold sculptural forms and the use of materials that feel both feminine and crafted, the culmination is a curvaceous, slatted timber funnel form, which frames the window and extends to fill the space, carrying shoppers inside beneath the overarching structure. Streamlined slender wooden slats continue throughout the store, playing with contrasts of light and shadow while serving as displays for merchandise against duck egg blue-colored walls. The space evokes femininity and movement. Jigsaw's intention from its founding in 1972, "to sell stylish clothes in inspiring surroundings," is still ringing true today. - Margaret K.
