Dewberry convinced FCDPWES to use directional drilling for the sewer piping. “This method minimized any impact on the homeowners’ property and the surrounding trees,” says Ashlee Marsh, PE, Dewberry project manager. Nestled among hundreds of mature oaks, the River Oaks subdivision in Fairfax County, Virginia, is an affluent community with many homes in excess of 4,500 square feet. When homes in the neighborhood started to experience septic tank failures—thereby posing a potential health hazard and environmental threat to the nearby Potomac River—Fairfax County engaged Dewberry to provide a feasibility study, sewerage system design, and construction engineering services. “It was obvious from the project’s inception that Dewberry’s staff had the technical expertise and professionalism necessary for a successful project,” says Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Project Manager Randall Flowers. “They not only served as engineering consultants but were also instrumental in educating the public and gaining project support within the community.” Dewberry’s solution included a combination of shallow low pressure sewers with individual house grinder pumps, and deep gravity sewers constructed within existing streets to meet the neighborhood’s needs and preserve the trees. • 114 single-family homes • Feasibility study and wastewater system design • Conducted multiple field inspections with homeowners to minimize construction impact • Construction completion estimated for spring 2008
