Annual Review 2007 - (Page 12) Dam Replacements Re-establish Assets of a Unique Com Restoring Medford Lakes The Borough of Medford Lakes, New Jersey, is one of the most unique communities in the United States, with over 150 log cabin homes and 22 lakes, as well as hundreds of lakefront properties located in a rustic vacation setting. Medford Lakes also lies within the New Jersey Pinelands Preservation Area. On July 12, 2004, a 1,000-year storm caused the failure of the Upper and Lower Aetna dams in Medford Lakes, resulting in the evacuation of 950 residents. Four hundred families were displaced from their homes and eight Burlington County municipalities were inundated. Following the disaster, Dewberry was contracted by FEMA to analyze the hydrology for the South Branch Rancocas Creek Watershed. The Borough also asked Dewberry to design replacement dams, which would help restore the area. Upon completion of the dams, Borough of Medford Lakes Manager, Richard Knight, stated: “This was truly a community effort, and we can all be proud of what we have accomplished two dams that have added to our community and added to those things that make Medford Lakes the truly special place that we call home.” • Project cost of $8.2 million • Each dam is 320 feet long and 12-14 feet high • Dewberry provided dam engineering, geotechnical engineering, feasibility studies, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, dam break simulations and hazard classifications, floodplain surveys, permitting, construction support services, operation and maintenance manuals, and LiDAR munity Alan Schindler, photography “We proposed and implemented roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam replacements to minimize the impact on adjacent landowners and expedite construction,” says Peter Black, PE, CME, CFM, Dewberry project manager. “Also, by replacing the dams with in-kind materials, our design satisfied New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection standards.” Team members Peter Black, PE, CME, CFM, Michael Sears, PE, Mary Redfern, and Steve Benosky, PE, stand near the two Medford Lakes dams they designed, which has helped to restore this picturesque New Jersey community. 12 | 2007 Annual Review | www.dewberry.com http://www.dewberry.com
