At the intersection of Interstates 395, 495 and 95 in Virginia, the Springfield Interchange is located in the heart of the heavily congested Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and is one of the busiest interchanges on the East Coast, serving approximately 450,000 vehicles daily. ridor The eight-year improvement project was initiated to improve chronic traffic congestion and safety problems in the area by separating local, highoccupancy, and through-traffic lanes. Dewberry, in a joint venture with Bechtel Corporation, worked closely with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to help sustain normal traffic capacity during peak hours throughout construction. The joint venture’s focus was to maintain communication and coordination with the traveling public, provide quality construction inspection, a safe work zone, and maintain respect for the surrounding environment. • On-budget construction cost of $676 million • Coordination of seven contractors over seven phases of work • Eight-year project duration, from 1999-2007 • Fifty new bridges and ramps • Lane size increased to 28 lanes at the road’s widest point • 750,000 tons of asphalt and 43,000 tons of steel used in construction Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine attended the completion ceremony and commended VDOT, contractors, and the community for their stellar cooperation on the project. “We have greatly improved the quality of life for nearly half a million motorists a day,” Kaine said.
