Annual Review 2007 - (Page 6) Enhancing the U.S. Army Community New Initiatives at Fort Belvoir Provide Quality Living The November 8, 2007, groundbreaking for the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia was a milestone not only for the U.S. Army’s 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program, but also for healthcare services supporting military personnel and their families. In a joint venture, Dewberry and HDR are designing the 1.2-million-square-foot, seven-level hospital complex that includes state-of-the art features for intensive care, medical imaging and laboratories, behavioral health, emergency healthcare, operative services, and extensive outpatient facilities. Project team members, contractors, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representatives, and other military branches break ground on the new hospital complex. “Everyone is working hard to meet this aggressive schedule,” says Kurt Thompson, PE, with the Dewberry team (above, second from left). “This facility is to be up and running in 2011 and will provide all beneficiaries of military health care the enhanced services they deserve.” In addition, as part of the Belvoir New Vision Planners joint venture team, Dewberry is also leading program integration to relocate 19,200 personnel to Fort Belvoir. Integration supports master planning, scheduling, risk reduction, space planning, design, and construction for personnel at Fort Belvoir complying with BRAC. • Supporting a $6.5-billion BRAC program on the 13.5-square-mile U.S. Army post • Providing program integration, architectural design, planning and programming, site/civil engineering, transportation design, and structural engineering • Hospital complex being built under an integrated-design-bid-build contract, a first for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District • Designing hospital complex to meet LEED® Silver certification as well as antiterrorism/force protection requirements Standing behind the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club, Dewberry team members Ben Wallen, PG, Tom Christensen, PE, Rob Snow, PE, Mark Scott, RA, Ernie Katzwinkel, PE, LEED AP, and Mike Callahan, AICP, are on-hand to assist. | 2007 Annual Review | www.dewberry.com http://www.dewberry.com
