Annual Review 2007 - (Page 7) Working to Coastal Mapping and Storm Surge Modeling are Confidence in a Time of Crisis Create a Safer Florida Standing along the coast in Florida, Paul Talbot, Brian Mayfield, CP, GISP, GLS, Phil Thiel, Dave Maune, PhD, CP, CFM, and Kevin Slover, Dewberry’s team on the PDS contract, get their feet wet on the project. To date, the contract has resulted in over $12 million of work for the PDS team. “The density of scrub vegetation in Florida creates a unique challenge for elevation modeling,” says Brian Mayfield, CP, GISP, GLS, Dewberry’s project manager. “As a result, we have modified our LiDAR collection parameters to collect four points per square meter. This will provide the state a higher degree of certainty that their elevation data is accurate and complete, resulting in a higher quality coastal and storm surge analysis for each community.” In 2007, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) awarded a contract to Program and Data Solutions (PDS), a Dewberry-led joint venture that includes URS Corporation and PBS&J. The contract arose from a 2006 bill which was passed in the Florida Legislature requiring FDEM to provide updated coastal mapping, storm surge modeling, and evacuation routing to better protect the citizens of Florida. Under the contract, PDS is providing FDEM with coastal mapping composed of LiDAR collection, digital orthophotography, development of detailed 3-D breaklines, and one-foot contour mapping. The storm surge modeling entails using detailed elevations for integration into Sea, Land and Overland Surges from Hurricanes (SLOSH) models to help FDEM better plan for mass evacuation in the event of a catastrophic hurricane or storm surge. FDEM, regional planning councils, and the local government entities in affected zones will be able to plan for evacuations using these model results. Throughout the past year, this project provided an opportunity for Dewberry to highlight its program management, geospatial services, coastal modeling, and application development capabilities. For example, Dewberry’s application developers created a series of integrated GIS tools to support the project, which allowed users to better integrate spatial data into the SLOSH models and more rapidly visualize the elevation data. www.dewberry.com | 2007 Annual Review | 7 http://www.dewberry.com
