The museum, housed in the Historic Rock Building, was a former saloon from 1886, and will feature area history and artifacts. A Wild West town in 1881, Roanoke was the destination for robust cattlemen featuring two saloons, two hotels, a horse trough, a blacksmith and a water tank. In 1933, Roanoke was incorporated and elected the town’s first Mayor. Roanoke purchased its first fire truck, in 1948, a 1928 LaFrance and in 2000, the City completed a mini-museum in the historic downtown in honor of all the volunteer firemen with the old LaFrance at the center. Celebrate Roanoke, Yesterday and Today, the Heritage Festival held on the second Saturday in October and the Historic Christmas Event, on the first Saturday in December, are located on Oak Street in the heart of downtown Roanoke.
