Nocona Athletic Goods is the last U.S. manufacturer of professional leather baseball gloves. A tour through its factory here mirrors this all-American sport and its history. The Montague Boot Company manufacturers the Larry Mahan brand cowboy boots for Cavender’s Western Wear. Nocona is undergoing a wonderful downtown revitalization with new shopping opportunities and new restaurants. Additionally, a short distance away is Lake Nocona, a 25,000 acre lake with great fishing and water sports capability. We are also looking forward to the completion of our heritage museum which will focus on the varied history of the region from one of the largest private collections of Indian artifacts, through the Chisholm Trail and the leather industry, to the discovery of the North Texas oil fields. Nocona was named for the wise and valiant Comanche warrior, Chief Peta Nocona. He and his wife, Cynthia Ann Parker, were the parents of famed Quanah Parker. Nocona and the surrounding area have a long history of American Indian civilizations including Spanish Fort along the Red River. As the longhorn cattle industry developed in Texas, cowboys herded them along the Chisholm Trail. This famed route from southern Texas to Kansas passed through Nocona to nearby Red River Station for crossing into Oklahoma. Supplying the cowboys with necessary goods like boots, belts, and other leather goods spawned Nocona’s reputation as the “leather goods center of the southwest.” Come visit Nocona, It’s not JUST the Old West anymore! nocona.org ROANOkE Come see Roanoke’s Visitors Center and Museum on historic Oak Street.
