Nocona is undergoing a wonderful downtown revitalization with new shopping opportunities and new restaurants. Additionally, a short distance away is Lake Nocona, a 25,000 acre lake with great fishing and water sports capability. We are also looking forward to the completion of our heritage museum which will focus on the varied history of the region from one of the largest private collections of Indian artifacts, through the Chisholm Trail and the leather industry, to the discovery of the North Texas oil fields. History buffs will want to visit the 1890 Jail Museum, located north of the historic Clay County Courthouse and Camp Buffalo Spring. Water enthusiasts will enjoy Lake Arrowhead State Park. From fishing piers or by boat visitors can angle for crappie, catfish, bass and perch. Nocona was named for the wise and valiant Comanche warrior, Chief Peta Nocona. He and his wife, Cynthia Ann Parker, were the parents of famed Quanah Parker. Nocona and the surrounding area have a long history of American Indian civilizations including Spanish Fort along the Red River. As the longhorn cattle industry developed in Texas, cowboys herded them along the Chisholm Trail. This famed route from southern Texas to Kansas passed through Nocona to nearby Red River Station for crossing into Oklahoma. The museum, housed in the Historic Rock Building, was a former saloon from 1886, and features area history, artifacts and visitor information. A Wild West town in 1881, Roanoke was the destination for robust cattlemen featuring two saloons, two hotels, a horse trough, a blacksmith and a water tank. In 1933, Roanoke was incorporated and elected the town’s first Mayor.
