PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 1) LISA’S LETTER Driven by Need For days in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, we all found ourselves glued to our televisions and Internet, stunned by the devastation. As the news footage showed us the homes and neighborhoods affected by the disaster, I was, once again, horrified by the pictures of poverty. Such images reminded me of why the pro bono work we do around the country is so important: in our own country, people are still living in thirdworld conditions. At DLA Piper, we are committed to providing pro bono services to people without means and the neediest nonprofits. Our program assists our country’s most vulnerable populations, supports communities and makes a lasting difference in the lives of our clients. We use our resources, talent and experience to team with our clients and address systemic issues so that our work can have an even greater impact. Immediately following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, our lawyers approached me in droves, wanting to know how they could help. But at that time, hurricane victims needed food, water and shelter. It was too soon to provide them with legal assistance. It took time to determine how we could use our legal skills to help. Nearly three years later, I am proud to introduce the firm’s first national signature project, established to support the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Our cover story shows the depth of involvement our lawyers have had in Mississippi and the real difference they are already making in the lives of those who lost everything. Throughout this Bulletin, you will see that our pro bono work continues to span a wide array of issues: from individual representation to international human rights. These stories demonstrate how deeply the pro bono culture runs at our firm. Many of us are involved, from first-year associates learning new skills to the most seasoned partners. The personal accounts in this Bulletin convey the profound sense of satisfaction our lawyers receive from their voluntary efforts. We hope their stories will inspire you as they have inspired us.
