Among the honors she has garnered, Sandy was twice named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by the Maryland Daily Record. In addition to her thriving practice, Sandy is the chairperson of the board of trustees and president of the board of directors at Enoch Pratt Free Library, chairs the board of the Baltimore Cancer Support Group, advises the Baltimore Museum of Art and sits on the board of the Marjorie Cook Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting equality of women under the law. Throughout our interview, Sandy responded to numerous questions with quotes from the teachings of Hillel: “If I am not for myself, who is for me? But if I am for myself only, what am I? And if not now, when?” Sandy lives by these teachings, and we are thankful for it. Q: How did you get started in the law? My path has not been traditional. I started off at the University of Pennsylvania as a physics major, but graduated with an English degree. I then decided to go to graduate school to study medievalism and ended up getting a degree in library science. After five years as a librarian in the Baltimore City schools, I enrolled in law school. I have been practicing for almost 30 years, with the past 16 years at DLA Piper. My work has focused on serving the estate and tax planning needs of high net-worth individuals. SUMMER 2008 | 19
