I think that this work is a nexus of three areas: good writing, good conceptual and math skills and, perhaps most importantly, good people skills. This work requires you to have a great deal of empathy for your clients. On more than a few occasions, tears have flowed during client meetings — both mine and the client’s. I enjoy the emotional component of my work. Q: How did you get started in pro bono work? I’ve always felt compelled to do pro bono. I began by representing indigent individuals with wills and set up programs for seniors, helping with their estate planning needs. Q: What kind of pro bono work do you prefer? I prefer the more complex work I do for charitable organizations, assisting them with trusts and estates issues. Advising a charity where I can help a large group of people gives me the greatest satisfaction. It is a better use of my skills to tackle tough issues for them and to help charities raise serious money. As a lawyer, it is important to use your personal gifts for the greater good. Q: you take on so many pro bono cases. Why do you do it? Being ethical was important in my household growing up. I was raised and tried to live my life according to the teachings of the Hebrew scholar Hillel, who said, “If I am not for myself, who is for me? But if I am for myself only, what am I? And if not now, when?” I believe in things such as “love your neighbor as yourself.” If you only live for yourself, what are you and who are you? Q: It is evident that leading your life in this manner makes you a role model. Do you see yourself this way? While I don’t see myself as a role model, I am not shy in letting others know what I believe is important. I try to teach women associates to advocate for themselves and teach them, “If I am not for myself, who is for me?” I really believe this. I also believe strongly in giving back. We have an obligation to give back, both time and money, and I tell this to anyone who will listen. 20 | PRO BONO BULLETIN
