MAPPInG IMPACT CHICAGo Many lawyers helped conduct the first-ever Lawyer in the Classroom series held at the Nancy B. Jefferson alternative School, located inside the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. Lawyers taught about the legal system, providing instruction about basic constitutional rights, the process of drafting laws and the right to free speech. SEATTLE Byron Dailey joined the Screening Committee for Washington attorneys assisting Community Organizations (WaaCO), an organization that provides pro bono legal services to nonprofits in the Seattle area. SACRAMEnTo Our client america’s Second Harvest was sued in Sacramento Superior Court in a case involving an injury sustained at one of its distributors. Finding that america’s Second Harvest had no ownership or control of the food bank’s day-to-day operations and no liability as a matter of law, the court granted the client’s motion for summary judgment. MInnEAPoLIS Bridget Sullivan is representing a client with asylum and criminal legal matters. SAn FRAnCISCo Purnima King is providing outside general counsel support to the San Francisco affiliate of the Susan g. Komen Foundation, best known for sponsoring the annual Race for the Cure to combat breast cancer. EAST PALo ALTo Nickolas Bohl successfully represented a woman seeking protective and child visitation orders against an emotionally and physically abusive father. LoS AnGELES armen Martin is representing The art of elysium, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing therapeutic support through art, music and drama to children undergoing reconstructive and plastic surgery at Children’s Hospital in Los angeles. SAn DIEGo Lisa Haile and Stacy Taylor are handling foreign trademark matters for CaRe, USa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities worldwide achieve a lasting victory over poverty by attacking its root causes. PHoEnIx The Phoenix office has partnered with St. Mary’s Food Bank alliance, holding monthly food drives and quarterly food packing and sorting activities and providing pro bono legal services. AUSTIn In 2003, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty published Alone Without a Home: A State-By-State Review of Laws Affecting Unaccompanied Youth. a team of lawyers from across the country, led by Rebecca Jones (austin), have been assisting the Center in the painstaking process of updating this comprehensive manual in time for its re-release in Summer 2008. DALLAS Tania Hepfner Conroy was elected to the North Texas Food Bank’s board of directors and will serve as legal counsel to the organization, a member of america’s Second Harvest that transfers food to those in need through nine programs and more than 400 member agencies in 13 North Texas counties. 22 | PRO BONO BULLETIN
