PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 30) nEW PERIMETER New Perimeter Launches the Addis Ababa Law School Project Entrance to Addis Ababa University DLA Piper’s international pro bono affiliate, New Perimeter, has launched a major project to support a law school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Partnering with Northwestern University School of Law and Accenture, New Perimeter is providing resources and educational support to law students and faculty members at the Addis Ababa Law School. Addis Ababa Law School is the hub of Ethiopia’s legal education community, but it now faces extreme challenges: aging facilities and a lack of financial resources that compromise Ethiopia’s ability to keep up with the legal demands of the 21st century. Now DLA Piper’s international pro bono affiliate New Perimeter and firm client Accenture are partnering with Northwestern University School of Law to help. Lawyers are traveling to Addis Ababa to share their time and knowledge directly with the students and faculty. The partnership will provide extensive resources and support in a project expected to last two years. Elaine Radford, DLA Piper’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Europe and Asia, notes, “With more than 30 DLA Piper attorneys from Europe and the US participating in the initiative, we hope to respond to the law faculty’s request to offer courses pertaining to international law and to help make the school an important player in the economic and legal development of Ethiopia.” Through New Perimeter, the firm will also assist the law school in sponsoring and hosting a conference on law and economic development in Addis Ababa during 2008. Other planned projects include enhancing the library and creating a research law and economic development research hub. 30 | PRO BONO BULLETIN
