nEW PERIMETER TEACHInG In ETHIoPIA In April, Jay Finkelstein (Northern Virginia) led a team of five lawyers teaching a two-week course on International Business Negotiations to law students. While in Addis, Jay and his team, which hailed from Brussels, Norway and Chicago, also lectured to the Law School faculty and members of the Ethiopian Bar and met with lawyers from the Ministry of Trade and the Norwegian Ambassador to Ethiopia. In addition, the team spent a weekend traveling to Mekelle University at the University’s and Norwegian Embassy’s request to lecture to Mekelle law students on negotiation techniques. “The fact that we were the first international instructional team added to the experience at all levels: teaching, personal and professional,” Jay says. “We were able to infuse the international business negotiations class with true international perspective and experience, while building bonds not only with our students but among ourselves and our offices.” One of the Addis LLM students who took the negotiation course remarked, “I’m really impressed and felt lucky to be a part of the program, which I think gave us important lessons on how to negotiate in business.” Claudia Salomon (New York) recalls, “We were told the students might not say anything, but just the opposite was true. They had so many questions — smart questions that reflected that they were thinking and struggling with the text.
