PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 33) AWARDS AnD RECoGnITIon Liberty Bell Award Docket manager Tony Cerda (Chicago) received the Liberty Bell Award from the Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division on April 29. This award recognizes a member of the community who has rendered service that strengthens the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under law. To qualify, the nominee must be a non-lawyer, have a sense of responsibility for community welfare and public duty, help others to understand and assert their rights under the law, promote and encourage respect for and obedience to the law and assist the smooth functioning of our system of justice. Tony was recognized for the more than 15 years of pro bono service he has given to the Asian American Legal Services Clinic in Chicago and the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). At the GCFD, Justice Joy V. Cunningham of the Illinois Appellate Court presents the Liberty Bell Award to Tony Cerda Tony organizes food repack nights and other events, where volunteers clean and pack hundreds of boxes of perishable and non-perishable food items for local pantries and kitchens, which then serve the homeless and less fortunate people of Chicago. At the Asian American Legal Services Clinic, he volunteers as a paralegal, screening cases and providing translation help that bridges the gap between clients who may not speak English and their volunteer lawyers. He advises the lawyers and clients in myriad complex court procedures, especially those attendant to domestic relations and child support cases. And on top of all that, he organizes the annual food drives in the Chicago office, volunteers for events with our longstanding partner Barry Elementary School and was instrumental in assisting our lawyers in their representation of clients in the Signature Project in Juvenile Justice.
