PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 35) AWARDS AnD RECoGnITIon Highland Park, Illinois Community Land Trust On February 25, Jesse Dodson, Harold Francke and Shari Helft Lennon (all Chicago) were honored by the Highland Park City Council for their contributions to the Highland Park, Illinois Community Land Trust, a nonprofit that owns and develops affordable housing. Over the past three years, DLA Piper has acted as its counsel in an array of real estate issues. Most recently, the team assisted with a complicated 14-unit affordable “green” townhouse development that involved funding from eight sources. InnovAction Award The College of Law Practice Management recognized DLA Piper with the 2007 InnovAction Award, honoring the unique work of its nonprofit affiliate, New Perimeter. Charles R. Coulter, chair of COLPM, explained that the international judges “determined that DLA Piper’s creation and successful application of the New Perimeter Project is exactly the type of innovation and implementation the InnovAction Awards are designed to recognize.” The ABA’s Center for Pro Bono also noted the significance of this award, sending a congratulatory letter to Sheldon Krantz (Washington, DC). The letter reads, “Your vision and distinguished service to your community and its poor and underserved inspire us each day in the work we do.” Maurice S. Weigle Award On July 14, Grace Poe (Chicago) received the 2008 Maurice S. Weigle Award from the Chicago Bar Foundation. The award recognizes a young lawyer who has made exceptional contributions to the profession, the organized bar and the community. Grace was honored in particular for her stellar work as a leader in the Chicago office Election Protection efforts this year. Community Partnership Award On March 25, Sandy Gohn (Baltimore) received the Community Partnership Award from Health Care for the Homeless (HCH), one of the pre-eminent advocacy organizations on homelessness issues not only in Baltimore but in the nation. Sandy contributed countless hours of legal service to settle an estate naming HCH as a co-beneficiary, and she assisted HCH to receive the settlement on a sizeable bequest that would support HCH’s mission.
