PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 36) AWARDS AnD RECoGnITIon Seeds of Justice Award On September 26, 2007, The Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest presented the inaugural Seeds of Justice Award to the legal team litigating Carson P. v. Heineman, a groundbreaking case seeking accountability for and change to Nebraska’s broken foster care system. The award recognizes the law firms and lawyers involved in this major initiative to improve the lives of thousands of Nebraska’s children. Stanley Adelman (Chicago) was honored for his work leading the legal team. Philadelphia Lawyer Recognized as volunteer of the Month Michael Eidel (Philadelphia) was honored by Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP) as Volunteer of the Month for March 2008 for his outstanding assistance to its clients, primarily for the representation he provided in civil forfeiture cases. The mission of Philadelphia VIP is to foster the spirit of volunteering and to provide legal services to those in the community who do not have access to legal representation. Excellence in Pro Bono Service At its 20th anniversary celebration in June in Boston, featuring US Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), the Lawyers Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing and Homelessness honored Stephen nolan (Boston), who has served on the board of directors for many years, for his leadership and tireless work for the organization. The Lawyers Clearinghouse provides pro bono legal services to nonprofit organizations, groups seeking nonprofit status and guests of area homeless shelters. Pennsylvania Bar Pro Bono Award On May 5, Kristin Barrett (Philadelphia) received the 2008 Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Pro Bono Award in recognition of her deep commitment to and outstanding talents in pro bono legal work. Kristin was singled out for her extraordinary work with immigrants, including her work obtaining asylum for a couple from Liberia. (Please see related story on page 15.) 36 | PRO BONO BULLETIN
