Cornerstone Award Ellen Clark (new york) was chosen by the Lawyers Alliance for New York as a recipient of the 2007 Cornerstone Award, which recognizes outstanding pro bono legal services provided to nonprofit organizations by institutions and business lawyers. Ellen was honored on December 13, 2007, for the extensive work she has performed on behalf of Head Start programs throughout New York City. Ellen has assisted many Head Start programs with corporate governance and regulatory compliance issues. But she has gone well beyond the call of duty in her representation of Seventh Avenue Center for Family Services. She has become its volunteer general counsel and has assembled a team of associates to help the organization streamline its complex corporate structure. Her legal work has left the organization better prepared to fulfill the overall purpose of Head Start: to provide comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families so that the children can better succeed in school. Commitment to Justice Award B’nai B’rith International honored DLA Piper on March 31 with its 2008 Commitment to Justice Award. The award honors the firm’s outstanding dedication to providing pro bono services internationally through New Perimeter, its affiliated nonprofit, and domestically to worthy organizations, causes and individuals in need. Berl Bernhard (Washington, DC), was honored for his role as chairman of the Middle East Investment Initiative; Sheldon Krantz (Washington, DC), was honored as founding director of New Perimeter; and Joint CEOs Frank Burch (Baltimore) and Lee Miller (Chicago) accepted the award on behalf of the entire firm. Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year Award On September 29, 2007, DLA Piper was named the 2007 Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year by the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP), recognizing the firm’s many contributions to SDVLP’s pro bono clinics, programs and cases. In particular, the award recognized the firm’s work to help a young girl in foster care obtain disability services. SUMMER 2008 | 37
