PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 38) AWARDS AnD RECoGnITIon outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Law Firm On March 13, the Tampa office was awarded for Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Law Firm by the Hillsborough County Bar Association and the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit’s pro bono program, H.A.V.E. A Heart. The firm has provided pro bono service to Bay Area Legal Services, to support Hillsborough County’s only legal aid program. Through BALS’ Community Counsel Program, attorneys assisted organizations that focus on the needs of the homeless, affordable housing and disaster relief and preparedness. Lawyers have advised on corporate development and restructuring, contract management and real estate development. In addition, the firm has provided training for nonprofits on a variety of legal issues. The 2008 Maryland Pro Bono Service Award On June 14, Emily Wright (Baltimore) was honored with a 2008 Maryland Pro Bono Service Award. Only four such awards are given annually to recognize individuals for their selfless work of providing access to justice for those in need. Emily has been involved in myriad pro bono assignments since she joined the firm. One of her most significant projects was on behalf of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay. DLA Piper was asked to draft an amicus curiae brief to the Supreme Court of the United States. Emily was highly involved in all aspects of this project and was responsible for researching and drafting the brief. This was an exceptional undertaking, particularly within its compressed timeframe. Notably, the brief was quoted in an article published in The New York Times on December 3, 2007, “For Justices, Another Day on Detainees.” California Lawyer Angel Award California Lawyer magazine awarded Pro Bono Counsel Renée Chantler (East Palo Alto) its Angel Award on December 6, 2007, for her fierce commitment to pro bono. Renée was specifically recognized for her tireless work on behalf of Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto. In addition to working on her own cases, Renée also mentors and supervises lawyers in their pro bono legal work and helps match the firm’s lawyers to pro bono cases.
