PROBONO Bulletin - Summer 2008 - (Page 42) WHAT oUR CLIEnTS SAy ABoUT US Client Facing Discrimination Randy Campbell sent this thank you letter in April to Lew Conwell and the team of Tampa lawyers that represented him in his 1983 claim. Mr. Campbell filed suit against the correctional officer who prohibited him from continuing to use his cane for over four months, causing a prior leg injury to worsen. Gratitude for Firm Role in Environmental Issues On November 12, 2007, Lewis Gordon, director of the Environmental Defender Law Center (EDLC), sent a thank you letter to the firm in appreciation for the critical oversight and advice DLA Piper provided for two cases. “The EDLC would like to express its sincere thanks for the exceptional efforts made by the lawyers at your firm on behalf of two international non-governmental organizations: the Sierra Madre Alliance, based in Chihuahua, Mexico; and the Green Belt Movement, with offices in Kenya, England and the US.” In the first case, the firm is helping the indigenous Tarahumara community of Choreachi fight illegal logging and obtain a title to their lands. David Nachman (New York) led the team consisting of Juan Alcala (Austin), Veronica Jackson, Danica Ray and Alysson Snow (all San Diego) that drafted a brief essential to their case based on international human rights law. It is hoped that this report will become a model for the cases of other indigenous communities. The second matter supports the Green Belt Movement. Founded in 2004 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, this organization strives to provide income and sustenance to millions of people in Kenya through tree planting. It also conducts educational campaigns to raise awareness about women’s rights, civic empowerment and the environment throughout Kenya and Africa. DLA Piper lawyers have provided guidance and oversight to the Green Belt Movement in contractual transactions and policy development initiatives, both in the US and internationally. Jim Rathvon (Washington, DC) represents this client, while Thomas Reems, Steve Shimberg and Thomas Zutic (all Washington, DC) also contributed invaluable assistance. 42 | PRO BONO BULLETIN
