PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 1) LISA’S LETTER Projects that Define Our Firm Although every edition of the Pro Bono Bulletin includes a story about one or more of our ongoing Signature Projects, I am pleased that this edition highlights DLA Piper’s unique method for developing these large-scale initiatives. There are many reasons to be proud of our Signature Project model. In addition to providing an opportunity to “dig deep” into an issue, as the title of our cover story suggests, Signature Projects are a way to bring together offices (or practice groups, in the case of our Real Estate project), as well as a way to work with outside partners, such as our clients and academic institutions, in the joint pursuit of a common cause. These projects also provide a vehicle for building attorney experience and benchmarking skills. They have received significant attention from both within and outside DLA Piper. Most notably, the Signature Project Model was the key reason why the firm won the American Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico award this year. Indeed, they have become initiatives that truly define who we are as a firm. Most importantly, they have been a vehicle for providing legal assistance to hundreds of individuals from across the country who otherwise may not have had access to a lawyer and for making an impact on the critical social issues of our day. Every day, we push to make our Signature Project model even better, evaluating past projects with a critical eye as we develop those of the future. We are always exploring how to expand our model as we look for ways to focus the firm’s resources to better our communities. I can’t wait to see what we will develop next! Sincerely, Lisa R.
